When that balance is disrupted, the result can show up as redness, flaking, irritation, uneven texture or sensitivity.

At truu, we formulate with this wider skin environment in mind. This is why our products work.

Meet Malassezia

Malassezia is a family of yeasts that naturally lives on human skin, particularly in areas that produce more oil such as the scalp, face, chest and upper back.

For most people, it causes no problems. But in some people, the relationship between Malassezia, skin oils, the immune system and the skin barrier can become unbalanced.

Malassezia is strongly associated with conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and Malassezia folliculitis, sometimes referred to as fungal acne. Research also suggests it may play a role in some forms of atopic dermatitis, particularly around the head and neck.

The important point is that Malassezia itself is not necessarily the problem. The environment of the skin matters.

Why lipids matter

Malassezia is lipophilic, meaning it depends on external lipids to grow.

That is one reason it tends to thrive in oilier areas of the skin, and why we pay close attention to the oils, fatty materials and emollients used in our formulations.

We don't believe every oil is simply "good" or "bad". Different lipids behave differently, and a finished skincare formula is more complex than any single ingredient.

For us, being Malassezia-conscious means choosing ingredients deliberately and considering the environment they create on the skin.

Supporting the skin barrier

When skin is irritated or unsettled, its barrier can also become compromised. This can lead to increased moisture loss, dryness and greater sensitivity.

That's why our approach doesn't focus on microorganisms alone.

Hydration, barrier support and skin comfort are just as important. Our formulas are designed to support these functions without unnecessarily overloading the skin.

What about biofilms?

Biofilms are organised communities of microorganisms surrounded by a protective structure.

Laboratory research has shown that some Malassezia species can form biofilms, and that microorganisms within them may behave differently from those living freely.

It's an interesting area of research, but the science is still developing. Much of the evidence comes from laboratory studies rather than everyday human skin.

We use this research to help inform how we think about persistent skin imbalance, without claiming more than the evidence can support.
